Wanted to explore Fukuoka and this hotel was lovely base for doing it. We spent 1 night in japanese-style room. Moreover, it had parking on-site.

The staff at Kashima Honkan are helpful and go above and beyond to assist, despite their limited English skills. The breakfast served at the ryokan is delicious and the rooms are spacious. The on-site onsen is a great addition and adds to the overall experience.
Felt safe, no reason to complain.

I appreciate the fact that it is an old building with a rich history. It is good for those who want to stay in a real traditional Ryokan.

It is one of the few places where we could find a room for 3 at a reasonable price. It was a cosy place and the staff were very friendly. Staff could communicate in English and provided good tips on where to find the things we would like to do. Location was good, once we found our orientation, it was no problem to walk to the various subway stations including Hakata station which was about 10 minutes away. Tip: If you are coming from the airport, it is faster and hassle free to travel by taxi to the ryokan. The transport cost is marginally higher for our party of 3.
Minor issue, you need to lug your baggage up the stairs, there are no lifts. The spa facility is functional only. Given the choices of onsen outside, this should not be a major issue for onsen lovers.

Locality is good - less than 5 min from Gion subway station & a short 10 min walk to Canal City Hakata shopping mall. Unique experience of sleeping on tatami mat in a spacious room for 3 people. Has hot spring bath (for women and men separately) for those interested in hot spring.
Insufficient toilets - only 1 central toilet bowl & 2 showers for the entire Ryokan usage. The toilet is very small and squeezy, there is no place to hang your clothes/toiletries. Of the 2 showers, only 1 has a shower head. You have to bathe by pail in the other shower room. There should be more toilets and shower rooms with proper shower heads.
